Buckingham Palace serves since 1837 as the official home of the King/Queen as Head of State of the United Kingdom. It is one of the few remaining working Royal palaces in the world today and provides the setting for ceremonies and formal entertaining. Investitures, state banquets, garden parties and diplomatic receptions all take place here, as does the Prime Minister's weekly audience with the King/Queen. It is arguably one of the most recognised buildings in the world.

Post Boy, 1640s [1]

Mail Coach, 1790s [2]

Falmouth Packet Ship, 1820s [3]
[1] Post boys could be of almost any age and carried messages between relay points some 20 miles (32km) apart, the distance a horse could travel at speed before being replaced. Post boys kept to time and carried a horn, blown periodically, to warn of their approach.
[2] The first mail coach ran between Bristol and London on 2 August 1784. At the time, coaches were among the swiftest vehicles on the road. The only postal employee on board was the heavily armed mail guard. The last London-based mail coach ran in April 1846.
[3] Falmouth became an important port for ships sailing to the West Indies and the Mediterranean.

Travelling Post Office, 1890s [4]

Air Mail, 1930s [5]

Royal Mail Minivan, 1970s [6]
[4] The first purpose-built Travelling Post Office (TPO), in which mail was sorted en route, ran on 20 January 1838. Many of the trains exchanged mail pouches without stopping via trackside bag exchange apparatus. The last exchange took place in 1971. Today, mail still travels in sealed train carriages.
[5] The world's first scheduled airmail service began on 9 September 1911. The use of airplanes for long-distance transport of mail increased significantly during the 1920s and 1930s. Originally intended for Imperial Airways' European mail routes, HP 45 G-AAXE Hengist first flew on 8 December 1931.
[6] Minivans were purchased in large numbers in the 1970s following the demise of the Morris Minor. They were ideal for smaller collection and delivery duties in towns, but low height and limited ground clearance made them less suitable for rural deliveries.

amended by drawings from her painting book.
Helen Beatrix Potter (* 28 July 1866, Kensington, London; † 22 December 1943, Near Sawrey, Lancashire) was an English children's author and illustrator, natural scientist, farmer and preservationist. Immersed in the arts from an early age - her mother was a watercolourist and her father a photographer - she was inspired to sketch and paint fauna and flora during holidays in Scotland and Lake District, and went on to become a published illustrator. But it was the reworking of the stories and drawings in her picture-letters to children that led to the publication of »The Tale of Peter Rabbit« (October, 1902) and the start of a successful literary career.
She conceived some of her best-loved tales not for publication but to amuse real children. She was an intuitive verbal and visual storyteller and a passionate observer of the natural world. Her series of twenty-three little tales, elegantly written and exquisitely illustrated, continues to delight both children and adults the world over.

Windsor Castle is owned by the British Crown and has been the family home of British kings and queens for almost a thousand years. Covering an area of 13 acres, the castle is a working royal palace, regularly used for ceremonial and state occasions.
The year 2017 marks the 25th anniversary of the devastating fire, which was the spur to the extraordinary rebuilding and refurbishment that almost one million visitors a year enjoy. The fire at Windsor Castle broke out in the morning of 20 November 1992 and was finally extinguished fifteen hours later. One hundred and fifteen rooms were destroyed or very badly damaged by the fire and over a million gallons of water were pumped into the fabric of the building. The process of clearing, drying out, rebuilding and redecorating the damaged structure was completed five years later.

The Great War was a global war originating in Europe that lasted from 28 July 1914 to 11 November 1918. Contemporaneously described as »The war to end all wars« , it led to the mobilisation of more than 70 million military personnel, including 60 million Europeans, making it one of the largest wars and one of the deadliest conflicts in history. When the fighting was finally over, no-one could tell exactly how many had been killed but historians estimate that up to 10 million men lost their lives on the battlefield and another 20 million were wounded. Seven million civilians died as a direct result of the war. The war was a struggle between Europe's great powers, which were grouped into two hostile alliances. at »King's Cross« Railway Station , Borough of Camden, London. Harry was sorted to Griffindor's living and learning community, one of »Hogwarts'« four Houses . Harry's best friends are his fellow students Hermione Granger and "Ron" Weasley , both he met aboard the »Hogwarts Express« . Together, they faced many challenges during their adolescence.
During his magical education at »Hogwarts« Harry learns, that as a baby, he witnessed the murder of his parents James (»Prongs«) and Lily (née Evans) by the power-obsessed »Dark Wizard«, Lord Voldemort (Tom Riddle) , who subsequently attempted to kill him as well. The main story arc concerns Harry's struggle against Lord Voldemort, who intends to become immortal, overthrow the wizard governing body known as the
Ministry of Magic "Ignoratia Juris Non Excusat"
"Ignorance is no excuse in law"
, and subjugate all wizards and »Muggles« (non-magical people).

Magic Lines
Joanne (J. K.) Rowling conceived the idea for the Harry Potter series while aboard a delayed train from Manchester to London in 1990. Over the next five years, she began to map out all seven books of the series. In 1995, she finished her deput novel »Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone« , however the manuscript was rejected by twelve publishing houses. Finally the British publishing house Bloomsbury in London accepted the manuscript and released the book on 26 June 1997. Soon after, the children's novel had found immense popularity and commercial success worldwide - a new »Bestseller« was born. The seventh and final book in series »Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows« was released on 21 July 2007 and broke its predecessor's record as the fastest-selling book of all time.
The Harry Potter series is now published in eighty languages, and over 500 million copies have been sold across the world, becoming the best-selling book series in history. In 1998, Rowling sold the film rights of the first four Harry Potter books to Warner Bros. for a reported £1 million. The

debuted in May 1968.
The origins of the US publishing house MARVEL , specialized in comic books, date back to 1939. The US publisher of pulp magazines Martin Goodman (* 1908, † 1992) saw the huge success of the new comic-book format by the public and decided to enter the market under the name Timely Comics . In October 1939 he released Marvel Comics #1 . The period from 1938 to 1956 is known to fans and historians as the »Golden Age of Comic« .
In 1972 MARVEL opened a branch in the United Kingdom (MARVEL UK 1972 - 1995) to reprint US produced stories for the British weekly comics market. In September the first story was launched »The Mighty World of Marvel« . Four years later MARVEL created the fictional character of »Captain Britain« , appearing the first time in October 1976 in Captain Britain Weekly #1. The character was initially intended exclusively for the British comics market.

The long and prudent reign of Queen Victoria , (widowed in 1861 aged 42), is today known as »The Victorian Era« . It was a period of political, cultural, economical, technical, and industrial change within the British society and it was marked by a great expansion of the British Empire with enormous benefits to the British economy.

In the last decades of her life and reign, Queen Victoria received the nickname, »Grandmother of Europe«. The nickname had much literal justification, as her many children, four sons and five daughters (born between Nov 1840 and Apr 1857) , had married into many of Europe's royal families, and her numerous grandchildren (42), once grown, did the same.
